The European project PIX4life has the ambition to become the world’s first open access pilot line for Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC’s) targeting life science applications in the visible range.

“The focus of the work reported here is however rather on high-value instrumentation, namely Multi-Color Laser Engines (MLEs), a core element of cutting-edge biophotonic systems applied to confocal microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, including super-resolution Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) microscopy, flow cytometry, optogenetics, genetic analysis and DNA sequencing, to name just a few.

MLEs are required to provide excitation wavelengths for several commercially available biocompatible fluorophores.”

To implement the PICs for the envisioned MLEs, we opted for the TriPleX TM platform developed by LioniX Int., whose capabilities have been recently extended to the visible range in the framework of the project PIX4life, funded by the European Union to support the growing application space of SiN based visible wavelength PICs in the life sciences. This platform is expected to be accessible through open access Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) fabrication runs in the future.
